Welcome to Brighton and Sussex Dance lessons.

Specialists in first dances for weddings and high-end Ballroom and Latin dance lessons.

wedding dance lessons naer me.jpg

My name is Marcus Edwards, and I have been a professional dance teacher for the last 12 years. Providing high-end group dancing lessons as well as one-to-one dance lessons for the serious hobby dancers, competitors, and couples who want professional dance lessons for a first dance at their wedding or other special occasion.

I specialise in partner dancing, including all 10 Ballroom and Latin dances (Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Paso Doble and Samba) as well as American Smooth, Salsa, Argentine tango, Rock n Roll, Charleston, Lindy hop and many others. I have run dancing lessons for all these styles across Brighton, Hove, East Grinstead, Lewes and wider Sussex for over 12 years.

During my 12-year career, I have coached hundreds of students to complete their ISTD dance medal tests for which I have a 100% pass rate. Ranging from social dance tests, all the way through to Bronze, Silver, Gold, and higher-level examinations.

I have also coached many students to compete at national and international competitions to an extremely high standard, as well as train aspiring young dance teachers early on in their own careers.

For over 10 years, I have also used this extensive experience of many dance styles to help couples create beautiful first dances for weddings; from the spectacular and famous routines from Dirty Dancing, Scent of a woman, Take the floor and so on, to basic, yet elegant, personalised routines for those who want something very easy, but beautiful for their first dance on their wedding day. I also enjoy creating fun and quirky routines which are a bit different.

This has resulted in many happy couples over the years, who have been able to master and perform elegant first dances which look professional, but are easy and quick to learn.

I am also dedicated to making professional dancing lessons and coaching affordable to everyone, especially with the cost-of-living crisis currently underway in the UK. I always want my clients to have a first dance they are happy with.

Although I can command high hourly rates for my dance lessons based on my experience, I have done my best to keep my rates very low, so that everyone can access professional dancing lessons and high-end one to one coaching. This is also why I offer flexible payment plans for my clients for peace of mind, as well as slashing my prices by 40% for the years 2022 and 2023.

Spaces are limited, but please get in touch on 07956 788 112 or email at brightonandsussexdancelessons@gmail.com with the date of your wedding (or provisional if you have one), your song choice for your first dance if you have one, and any other questions you may have.

I very much look forward to working with you.

He is great teacher and really alowed the fun to flow, there was a lot of laughter but also really high quality of teaching from Marcus. He makes it really easy to learn and is so willing to adapt to what we wanted to do! 100% would recommend to a friends. We never thought we would be able to learn in just a few lessons . We are very excited to do our first wedding dance :) Thank you Marcus - Marta and Cerwin: Married February 2023

Testimonials from previous clients

Will and Jess

“We had done a couple of dance courses before for fun but we were not experienced dancers by any stretch of the imagination. Marcus put us at ease with his obvious knowledge and experience but also a friendly and relaxed learning environment.

When it came to our song choice, we knew what we wanted and Marcus just knew what exactly what kind of routine would work.

The routine he came up with was easy for us to pick up the different elements but also actually remember it all and put it together.

We wanted something that looked like we knew what we were doing and was impressive without being overly showy, and I feel like Marcus really nailed it with what he came up with.

The lessons were easy to organise and Marcus was very accommodating, even managing to squeeze one more last minute session in before the big day, just to make sure we were 100% happy with everything which was great.

When it came to the doing the routine on the day itself, it couldn’t have gone better. We both went into it confident and I think all the guests were suitably impressed!

Thank you Marcus, you really made the first dance a stand out moment on our big day. We would recommend anyone who wants to make their first dance special and wants to be confident doing on the day to get in touch.

Sally and Will

Marcus was amazing. At our first meeting, we gave him our chosen song and explained roughly what we were looking for in our wedding dance. Marcus then choreographed a routine which exactly fitted our choice and style. During each lesson, Marcus was patient and encouraging with both myself and my husband, even when I accidentally stepped on his toes! Marcus was totally professional and I would thoroughly recommend him if you are looking for a dance teacher for your wedding dance. Sally Cole

Gaby and Cej

Dancing is an important part of our lives and we wanted to make our “first” dance, as husband and wife, truly special. After choosing our music, Marcus worked with us to produce a superbly choreographed dance that reflected the emotion of the moment and mood. Marcus is an excellent teacher. He made developing and learning the dance fun through his approachable manner and expertise. With him we were able to explore different phases of the dance, discuss our ideas and match them to our ability as dancers. His clear guidance meant we were able to produce a beautiful final dance that impressed our family and friends, and left us feeling that we had expressed our love in the best way

Katherine and Shane

I (Shane) was a total beginner before we started our lessons and so I was somewhat nervous! But I have to say, Marcus has such a calming nature which put me at ease and before we knew it, Katherine and I were able to dance together proficiently. Marcus is very patient and always managed to find the positive points in our lessons which gave us more and more confidence. Nothing felt overwhelming and with Marcus’s graduated approach, introducing new techniques each lesson and constantly brushing up and perfecting everything we had learned until we had a very impressive dance!

Jenny and Gary

Jenny

Marcus has been teaching me ballroom and Latin dance for over 10 years. In that time, I have progressed from a complete ballroom beginner to reaching gold level and taking part in competitions both in the UK and Germany. Marcus' calm and patient teaching has given me the confidence to take on these challenges. I would wholeheartedly recommend his dance teaching.

Gary

I started learning ballroom dancing with Marcus fairly recently having had no dance training before - pogo-ing was more my style! I really appreciate Marcus' careful explanations of the steps, how to lead your partner and the craft of ballroom. Through his teaching I have gained the skills and confidence needed to practice and use these steps on many social occasions

Susan Kissling

I was a complete beginner when I started Ballroom and Latin dancing lessons

with Marcus in 2016, and was immediately impressed with his

professionalism. That, together with his unending patience, encouragement,

and tact, made learning to dance a positive pleasure. He has also greatly

improved my posture and confidence.

Even now, I still feel I learn something new in every lesson and always leave

with a smile on my face.

I cannot recommend Marcus highly enough.

Katherine and Shane's first dance journey.

Below is an example journey from start to finish by my most recent clients: Katherine and Shane Head

Step 1: Picking the song for the first dance/How you picked the song with Marcus

  • We managed to create a shortlist of the songs we wanted to perform our first dance to, sent them over to Marcus and discussed what we wanted from our dance. Our shortlist was: Taylor Swift - Lover, McFly - Happiness and Beyoncé - Love on Top. 3 very different songs. It was invaluable having Marcus’s opinion on this because he pointed things out about each song that we hadn’t even thought of and it became very clear that our perfect first dance song for our wedding was going to be Taylor Swift.

Step 2: Organising the dance lessons with Marcus

  • When planning a wedding, every spare moment is taken by wedding prep so for us it was very helpful to have a dance lesson near us on a set day each week. Marcus managed to fit within our busy work schedules too by giving us an evening slot for our dance lessons. There were times when we had over stretched ourselves with our diaries and had to re-arrange but Marcus was so accommodating and managed to fit us in regardless.

Step 3: Choreography discussions relating to the first dance with Marcus

  • Following on from choosing our perfect first dance song, we discussed the kind of dance we wanted and how we wanted to dance the full song with a nice intro, a must-have Viennese Waltz interlude and a big finish. As well as many opportunities for perfect photographs. We have attended many weddings over the years and wanted something much more special than a gentle sway to 30 seconds of a song. With Marcus, we measured out the space in the hall so we knew exactly what space we were working with so we could replicate this at our reception venue where the dance will be performed. We started our dance lessons around 4 months before the big day and I myself (Shane) was a complete beginner, never danced before in my life. But Katherine has danced before so I wanted to do her proud and give her the dance she deserved.

Step 4: Practicing and learning to dance with Marcus

  • As mentioned before, I was a total beginner before we started our first dance lessons and so I was somewhat nervous! But I have to say, Marcus has such a calming nature which put me at ease and before we knew it Katherine and I were able to dance together proficiently. Marcus is very patient and always managed to find the positive points in our dance lessons which gave us more and more confidence. Nothing felt overwhelming and with Marcus’s graduated approach, introducing new techniques each dance lesson and constantly brushing up and perfecting everything we had learned until we had a very impressive wedding dance!

Step 5: Site visit with Marcus

  • As the wedding was fast approaching, we discussed that it would be very helpful for Marcus to visit our wedding reception venue and have a good run through our dance in the space that we would be performing it in front of our friends and family. Marcus met us at the venue, we discussed the layout, mapped out our measurements of the hall we were practicing in and went ahead and danced it out until we were comfortable. This extra dance lesson at the venue was vital for our confidence on the big day.

Step 6: The first dance at the wedding

  • We managed to keep the details of our first dance to ourselves so we could just go out there, perform to our best abilities, have fun and hope for a round of applause at the end of it. But what a reaction we got! Everyone was blown away by the first dance and the cheers and applause we got was just something else. I was not expecting that considering we had never danced together and I had never danced before at all and with just 4 months of Marcus’s expert tuition we managed to impress every person in the room. Honestly that feeling is just incredible.

About

The First Dance Packages

Emergency First Dance Package (3 hours)

This package is for those couples whose wedding is a couple of weeks (or even days) away, and would like an elegant, fun, but deceptively simply first dance for their big day.

As with all packages, once the choreography is done (usually in your first dance lesson for this package), we film it so you can practice at home so that you can master it quickly. We then spend the next 2 dance lessons perfecting the finer details.

Alternatively, we have one long 3 hour dance session if we are really strapped for time and drill the dance until it’s in there!

For this package, I advise creating a first dance routine which is around 1 and a half minutes long (which in my experience is plenty) with a simple introduction and ending (which I have choreographed so that they are especially good for photos).

Although this package is for those couples with little time, the dancing lessons are relaxed, and great fun; which makes the dance much easier to learn.

Please email Marcus on brightonandsussexdancelessons@gmail.com or call 07956 788 112 for more information about this package.

Bronze First Dance Package (6 hours)

This package is for those couples whose wedding is a couple of months away.

With 6 lessons, which are more spread out, I can choreograph a more complicated and impressive first dance routine for you than for the emergency package.

If you want a real show stopping, impressive and memorable first dance started around 6 months to a year before the big day, I suggest the silver and gold packages.

Rest assured that with any of the packages, you will be taught a first dance which looks like you have had twice or thrice the number of dance lessons and practice time.

For this package, I can choreograph a first dance routine to cover an entire track if needs be, so that it ends when the track finishes (which looks very professional).

Please email Marcus on brightonandsussexdancelessons@gmail.com or call 07956 788 112 for more information about this package.

Silver First Dance Package (10 hours)

This is the most popular package, for those couples who want to start learning and perfecting their first dance around 3-6 months before the big day.

With the silver package, you will be taught an extremely impressive first dance routine, with all the finer details thoroughly worked on during these dancing lessons, which I would usually reserve for my more experienced students taking exams or entering competitions.

Most couples who pick this package have 1 dance lesson a week for 4 weeks to get the routine down, and then space out their remaining dance lessons over the final weeks and months before the big day.

This little and often approach takes all the stress out of learning your first dance and allows a greater degree of flexibility when planning sessions.

This package is also very competitive in price.

Please email Marcus on brightonandsussexdancelessons@gmail.com or call 07956 788 112 for more information about this package.

Gold First Dance Package (20 hours)

This package is for the serious couples who want to start learning their first dance routine up to a year in advance.

The sky really is the limit with this package, and I have produced some very impressive first dance routines with couples who have little or no dance experience at all. This is the kind of package where I can teach you the ‘full’ dirty dancing routine, or another famous, but tricky first dances.

This is also the cheapest package regarding the hourly rate of dance lessons.

Remember that there are flexible payment options for this package, and all packages, as detailed in the FAQ section.

Please email Marcus on brightonandsussexdancelessons@gmail.com or call 07956 788 112 for more information about this package.

Bespoke First Dance Package

If none of the first dance packages above appeal to you e.g., you would like more dance lessons than the gold package (for a really impressive first dance) or you would like something really different, then you can always talk to me about creating your own package of dance lessons near you.

Your bespoke package includes all the extras as outlined below as for the other packages.

*New for 2024/2025: A group dance lesson for your guests and/or family before the wedding*

This extra service came about as a suggestion from a previous couple, who wanted someone to teach their close friends and family how to dance at weddings, discos and other events which have a varied playlist.

In this hour and a half dance lesson, I take your wedding playlist, and teach your group some very basic, but impressive dance moves which can be used for almost all styles of dancing.

This ensures that on the day of your wedding, once the first dance has finished and the party starts, you will have plenty of guests willing to dance (as opposed to the dance floor clearing because people aren’t sure how to dance!)

This extra dance lesson has become very popular, because it gives people the confidence to dance at any event, including weddings, anniversaries, and other milestones.

In this dance class, I usually teach your guests Rock n Roll, American smooth and a dance style of my own making called ‘4 beat’, and with these 3 styles, you’ll be able to dance to almost any song ever created.

This dance class is also an extremely popular Stag or Hen activity!

Please email Marcus on brightonandsussexdancelessons@gmail.com or call 07956 788 112 for more information about this extra as part of your package.

FAQ's

How do the dance classes work?

Start by picking your wedding dance song, either using the extensive recommended song list on this site, or your own personal choice, then simply email me or call me using the information below. We will then talk about what you want from your wedding dance i.e., difficulty level, classical or quirky, time frames and so on. Once we agree on a wedding dance package (or a bespoke package), I then book a venue for a regular dance lesson near you, and we simply get cracking with the dance. The choreography, and any other potential issues, are dealt with in advance so that we can start learning straight away.

How do we pay for the dance lessons?

Due to the high cost of weddings, and a cost-of-living crisis in the UK, I have made payment flexible and easy. You can pay for all your wedding dance lessons upfront, or we can agree on a deposit amount and then set up a monthly payment plan which is easy to manage for yourself. This is so that if you want the gold package (20 hours of dance lessons), we can spread out the cost. You pay me directly as opposed to through a website which incurs additional costs, and I want to keep the prices competitive for my clients.

What if we don’t have a first dance song?

There is a song list found on the site with over 50 of the most recommended first dance songs which I have used over the years. Have fun going through them, listening to them (especially the lyrics) and see if any of them suit you. If not, I can always find a new first dance song to add to the list to suit your own style. Around 50% of my clients ask me to pick a first dance song for them.

What dance style is best for wedding dance lessons?

American smooth is the most popular for a wedding dance because it is very easy, very elegant and very versatile. It is almost mistake proof as well and looks harder than it is! Think Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and Dean Martin.

The Rock n Roll, Salsa and quickstep are also really fun, more upbeat styles of dancing which can be used for the majority of the most popular first dance songs at weddings. You can dance Rock n Roll to a lot of pop songs such as Pharell Williams ‘Get happy’ and Taylor Swifts ‘Shake it off’.

Waltz is very classical and elegant (and personally my favourite), and you can find example waltz songs on the song list. Popular waltz songs for weddings are Norah Jones ‘Come away with me’ and Cliff Richards 'When the girl on your arm'.

How do I get in touch?

Email me at brightonandsussexdancelessons@gmail.com or call me on my mobile on 07956 788 112. If I am with a client, please leave a voicemail and I will get back to you within 2-3 hours. You don’t necessarily need your wedding dance song choice, day of your wedding, or any other information ready. Just that you will need a first dance for your wedding at some point, and you need some help! I’ve done this for over 10 years, so I can answer all your questions regarding your wedding dance lessons.

Which wedding dance packages would be best?

The wedding dance lessons packages have been designed based on my experience over the last 10 years of what each couple wants. The majority of couples want to start their wedding dance early, therefore will opt for the silver or gold package and start learning a year in advance. The emergency first dance package is really for the last minute and for those couples who want something quick and easy without too much faff. Below is a brief breakdown of the time frame for each wedding dance lesson package:

Emergency wedding dance lessons package: Can be the week before or 1 month before

Bronze wedding dance lessons package: 1-2 months before

Silver wedding dance lessons package: 3-6 months before

Gold wedding dance lessons package: 6 months to a year before

Bespoke wedding dance lessons package: Either longer than a year or an intensive week of lessons as little as 1 month or a week before to learn a dance. Or anything in between.

Do you teach wedding dance lessons at peoples homes?

I can come and deliver wedding dance lessons in your home, however, depending on travel time there will be extra costs. The disadvantage of a home visit is that it is unlikely that we will be learning in a space like that which you will be dancing on your big day (unless you own a ballroom in your house!) However, I have done many emergency first dance lessons at client’s homes at the last minute with very satisfying results. I will always find a venue close by, so your wedding dance lessons will be near you!

Why is the emergency wedding dance package more expensive per hour?

Quite simply because a lot more work goes into a last-minute wedding dance routine, as well as booking a practice venue last minute and getting everything perfect before your wedding with less time. As with all my packages, I have kept costs low to keep them competitive.

How long does it take to learn a wedding dance?

I have taught some extremely difficult and incredibly impressive wedding dance routines. All of which have taken different amounts of time and number of dancing lessons to master. To learn a really impressive wedding dance takes about 10 lessons, a basic but effective wedding dance in 3 lessons and the seriously impressive wedding dances in 20. It really depends on what you want from your wedding dance lessons. Whatever you want to do, it will look professional because of the steps and styles I will teach you during your dancing lessons.

Any more questions? Email me or call me and leave a message if I’m teaching.

‘Marcus makes every dance he does personalised for you. No off-the-shelf routines’.

Do's and Dont's for your wedding dance lessons.

Do’s for your wedding dance lessons...

Start your wedding dance lessons early if you can

Always try and start learning your first dance at least 6 months to a year in advance. This is because once you have learned your dance routine, it is simply a case of practicing little and often so that on the wedding day it becomes second nature, with no stress or worry that you might make a mistake because you haven’t cemented the routine into your head. This isn’t to say that you cannot achieve an impressive first dance with 3-5 dancing lessons, only that by starting well in advance, it becomes very easy which adds to the elegant and professional look of your wedding dance. They say that half of performance and quality is simply confidence, which comes with good preparation and practice well in advance; and enough dancing lessons!

Wear the shoes you will be wearing for your wedding dance whilst practicing and during your dance lessons.

There are certain details you don’t want to give away about your first dance before the wedding (e.g., the dress!) but I strongly advise practicing your first dance in the actual shoes you will be wearing on the big day. This is to ensure that you are comfortable and well prepared. I have heard horror stories of brides not practicing in their high heels during their dancing lessons and having no balance on the big day (resulting in a wobbly first dance) or grooms not breaking their flash new leather shoes in, resulting in many blisters. Also, if you have practiced in the shoes you will be wearing, and you have practiced often, then performing your wedding dance on the day will feel completely normal. In your first dance lesson, I can advise on the ideal footwear for your wedding dance.

Get measurements for your wedding venue if you can

I always ask my clients for the dimensions of their dance floor. This is so I can choreograph a first dance which fits perfectly. I have heard horror stories of couples who learned their first dance without knowing the size of their dance floor, only to find on the wedding day that it didn’t fit! Once you give me your dimensions, I can not only choreograph a first dance that fits perfectly (I usually choreograph a routine for a dance floor slightly smaller than what yours will be to allow breathing room) but I can measure out a practice space in one of my venues for you so that when you come to learn with me, you will be practicing in a space identical to the one you use on your big day. Toward the end of your wedding dance lessons package, it will be more like a dress rehearsal so you are really prepared way before your last dance lesson with me.

If you cannot get your measurements, I will choreograph a wedding dance which fits on the smallest dance floor (The smallest I did was 5 meters sq) That way, you will know it fits! I have also choreographed a first dance for a venue without a dance floor where I taught the couple a routine which moved around the tables and chairs (they got married in a Greek taverna)

I will always find a way!

Have your music in many formats

If you have a DJ, great. Hopefully they will have everything backed up and in the right order. I will always advise my clients to have their music on multiple formats (on their phone, iPod, USB stick, CD and spares of those) just because, as the old saying goes failing to prepare is preparing to fail. I can tell you that some weddings I have worked on have suffered technical issues on the big day, only to be saved by the fact that I recommended spare speakers ‘just in case’. Again, during your wedding dance lessons, I can advise you about all various (and sometimes forgotten) aspects regarding a wedding dance.

Practice your wedding dance little and often

When you practice any new skill, or if you just want to keep your skills sharp, practicing little and often is key. This is because little and often, becomes a habit, and a habit becomes second nature.

Once I have taught you your wedding dance and it is complete. I recommend half an hours practice 2-3 times a week, and even less as the weeks and months pass and the big day get closer. In my experience, this makes for a very comfortable and confident looking couple, which makes the first dance look extremely well honed and elegant. You can always book a ‘booster’ dance lesson if you need extra help, but your package has run out. The dance lessons are the same hourly rate as your package, so you don’t get ripped off.

Be open to different song choices for your first dance

Some first dance songs, although they are fun and quirky, just simply don’t work as a first dance. Always have backups, and you can look at the extensive song list on this site for inspiration. You may be pleasantly surprised to find a song you never would have thought about. Most couples have 3-5 songs they’re thinking about. I can always advise you on what will work best.

Don’ts for you wedding dance lessons...

Don’t go too complicated*

If you want a complicated and professional looking wedding dance, the sky is the limit. I have choreographed routines for shows and competitions as well as train people for dance exams to a high standard, so I can go as simple or as flash as you like during your dancing lessons. However, you must start well in advance of your wedding day (at least 6 months to a year) unless you both have dance experience. I have taught a few couples with no dance experience an incredibly intricate first dance routine (Usually the Dirty Dancing routine) in 3 months, but that was with 1-2 lessons a week. Being realistic is key, that way you can do whatever you like.

*You can go as complicated and as flash as you like, just allow plenty of time, and enough dancing lessons!

Don’t let the first dance stress you out

You don’t want your first dance to stress you out. Your wedding is about you and the commitments you are making to each other in front of those you love. The routine I teach you, and the way I teach it during the dancing lessons, will guarantee that you won’t have to worry about making mistakes on the big day (In one of the dance lessons, it will be about what to do if you make a mistake – and how to cover it up!) I will never try and give you a wedding dance which is out of your comfort zone or realistic skill level. Your wedding dance will be second nature to you weeks or even months before the big day, so that you can enjoy your wedding without dreading the first dance. The dance lessons become easier and easier as the weeks go by!

Don’t leave your first dance to the last minute

Although I can teach you something beautiful in 3 hours, you won’t have the same amount of time to allow it to become second nature before the big day. This also goes for getting the measurements for your dance floor, picking your first dance song, and booking me in for your wedding dance lessons. Weddings can be very stressful to organise, but all stress in life can be managed by planning as best as you can. That is why when we get together, I get all the information beforehand, so that I can start teaching you your perfect first dance for your wedding straight away.
