There are many, many reasons why I rate Nat King Coles ‘L.O.V.E’ as one of the greatest choices for a first dance at a wedding. Aside from the title being so apt - and Nat King Coles amazing voice.
As a choreographer of weddings dances, for me it is the perfect tempo. Written in 4/4 timing and in a jazzy style, it lends itself extremely well to the dance style ‘American Smooth’, which is one of the easiest dance styles to learn quickly.
You can learn some impressive steps, which on the face of it look very tricky, but are in fact deceptively simple to learn.
American smooth is like the very formal and very difficult Foxtrot style but is much freer. You are allowed to release the ballroom hold and dance more open figures, including double spins under the arm for the follower, or with the leader spinning as well.
This makes American smooth an ideal dance style for weddings and special occasions because you can have real fun with it.
L.O.V.E is also very upbeat as opposed to the very slow, and sometimes dreary, older songs. It is a very happy song to listen to and your guests will love it. The beat is very clear so that even if you think you lack rhythm, you will be able to dance to this song.
The length of the song is also one of its strengths, at only 2 and half minutes long, it is almost the perfect length for a wedding dance: not too
long so as your guests might get bored and not too short so that you don’t kick of your evening with an elgant showstopper.
This also makes choreographing a routine much easier and therefore easier for you to learn.
American smooth is the most popular dance style for a first dance at a wedding or other special occasion and is by far the style I use the most when choreographing wedding dances.
