This week's top first dance song for weddings

Runaway by the Corrs

Style: Medium tempo Viennese Waltz/American smooth Viennese waltz/Lyrical

Difficulty: Easy/Medium

I have been asked to choreograph a first dance for several weddings using this song. When I ask my clients why they have picked this particular song for their first dance, they all say similar things...

The first is the lyrics. Lines like ‘Never gonna stop falling in love with you’ and ‘There’s nothing like me and you’ are all very apt for a wedding because, obviously, the reason you are getting married is that there isn’t any couple like yourselves! And hopefully you will continue to fall in love with each other again and again!

Secondly is the general pace and tone of the song; it is light and ethereal which is perfect for a wedding dance, and it builds gradually from the introduction when it is just the lead singer, then through to the first verse where the folk style kicks in. And folk music has the effect of making everyone happier and invoking a natural urge to sway with the music.

I have been told by previous clients that when they used this song for their first dance, it got everyone dancing as well, which is key because the first dance usually kicks of the rest of the evening by starting the main dance.

Finally, the fact that they can dance a Viennese Waltz for their first dance is a real selling point. This is because the Viennese Waltz is arguably the most romantic dance style ever created, but due to the speed to traditional Viennese Waltz music, it makes it very difficult to learn without at least 6 months of lessons for a first dance.

The fact that you can dance a slower Viennese Waltz to this song means that any couple can learn this elegant dance style for their first dance more quickly. Around 6-10 dance lessons are ideal.

In fact, the Viennese Waltz is by far the most requested dance style I am asked to teach for first dances, so I often suggest this song amongst others, including Christina Perri’s 1000 years and Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.

As a dance teacher the structure of the song is perfect. With a clear intro, verse 1, chorus 1, verse 2, chorus 2, an interlude and then repeating the chorus before the outro. All of which are easy to pick out in the song and with easy transitions between them.

This means that when I teach a couple their first dance, they can use these clear transitions between each verse and chorus as ‘check points’ to keep them on track. After a couple of lessons, when you have learned your routine, you will know your song inside out and be able to pick out the transitions and other ‘check points’ during you first dance.

The clear structure and transitions also mean that if you don’t want to dance to the whole song for you first dance (it is over 4 minutes long), you can decide which verse or chorus you want to end on and simply fade it out (usually ending with a snazzy lift or drop choreographed by me).

Also, because it is a slightly slower Viennese Waltz beat, I can add some nice open figures out of hold to create amazing shapes (and excellent photographs!) This is more characteristic of the American Smooth style Viennese Waltz which allows dance figures out of hold. Again, perfect for elegant and showy first dances at weddings.

In summary, it is a perfect song for couples, as well as a joy for me to choreograph and first dance to. What they call a win-win!

So, I would highly recommend giving this song a listen and seeing if it would be perfect for your first dance.

I have listed the lyrics below…

Say it's true, there's nothing like me and you Not alone, tell me you feel it too And I would runaway I would runaway, yeah I would runaway I would runaway with you

'Cause I have fallen in love With you, no never have I'm never gonna stop falling in love, with you

Close the door, lay down upon the floor And by candlelight, make love to me through the night 'Cause I have runaway I have runaway, yeah I have runaway, runaway I have runaway with you

'Cause I have fallen in love With you, no never have I'm never gonna stop falling in love, with you (with you)

And I would runaway I would runaway, yeah I would runaway I would runaway with you

'Cause I have fallen in love With you, no never have I'm never gonna stop falling in love, with you

Fallen in love with you No never, ever, I'm never gonna stop falling in love, with you With you, my love With you Ya da da da da da da da da da da da
